During raining season in May, the volunteers from DENER returned to serve at the Huzhu Elementary School in Nantou County. This reading course was taught by volunteer teacher Du, she brought the picture book “a red apple” to this class. This picture book intends to lead the children to unite and learn to share. It also conveyed the concept that the land we are using; we must nourish it, made it endless and remind ourselves of the concept of not forgetting our roots.

The first class began by the reading of the first and second grade children. As soon as they got the picture book, every child began to read quietly, without noise. We were very pleased to see such a change in the Long-term ‘’More Reading and More Happiness’’ program at Huzhu Elementary School. Kid’s enthusiasm remains the same whenever Teacher Du asks questions. From their whimsical and varied answers, you could see the innocence and creativity from the children.

The next extended activity was led by teacher Wei Chen. Due to the change in weather, the originally planned outdoor basketball course was changed to indoor games. Teacher Wei Chen divided the children into 2 teams and set up two long tables. Children need to roll the sticks on the long table to the corresponding positions with different scores. The end of the table was the highest score, but if you accidentally push it too far, the score would return to zero. In between ambition and patience, how would the children win the game?

The game then began. The two teams were doing all their work. One team surrounds the long table and cheers loudly for the players, and the other team actively discussing strategy on the sidelines, telling the players how to use their strengths from time to time. With the scores continued to tie, teacher Wei Chen opened the last matching game and asked each team to send five fighters to the battlefield to make a showdown!

At the moment, many hands all raised at the same time! “Teacher! I am the strongest!”, “Teacher choose me! I didn’t fall when I just rolled!” Each of the children recommended themselves, hope that they could participate in the ultimate match point. They want to earn glory for their team. With the assistance of volunteer teachers, the two teams each produced five representative players, who lined up at the long table to meet the challenge. As a result, the game started, and the air was mixed with a little tension. Even the children who did not play were still actively playing the best cheerleading team, gave the players confidence. “Bang!” There was a crisp sound in the room. It turned out that a kid wanted to win the highest score, but accidentally pushed the stick down. Teacher didn’t know whether to laugh or cry and said “Just now he said he would definitely get the highest score!”

The game was finally over. The winner team would get three candies each and the other team receive one each. Teacher Wei Chen still closely follows the theme of the picture book “sharing” saying that winning and losing is not the most important thing. What is more valuable is the willingness to share with others. As a result, the children shared the candies without hesitation. Now, every kid had the same amount of candies.

In the last class, Teacher Du gave each child a bag of seeds, hoping that the children could plant it carefully and experience the beauty of this land. When the children got the seeds, they shared the seeds to each other and found that everyone has something different. The volunteer teacher smiled and asked, “What do you think it will become when it grows up?”

Hope the seeds planted by the children would grow, just as the seeds of hope we planted in the hearts of these children.
