On June 1st, the seed teacher’s class was conducted by four teachers. These teachers have their own expertise and unique teaching methods in the teaching field. The trainees took the opportunity to ask questions to the teachers. Trainee Yu Lun first asked the teacher, “My art and craftsmanship is relatively weak, how can I strengthen it?” Trainee Kelly and Yi Ting also asked, “What skills should be used to extend the content after reading the picture book so that we can deepen the child’s understanding? ” Then trainee Wei Zhen wanted to know how to lead children in the classroom so she could be likeable? After listening to the questions, the teacher said they will help clear up the confusion and share the actual teaching experience during today’s class.

The first lesson started by Teacher Liu. Teacher Liu, who graduated from National Taichung University of Education, majored in Language and Literacy Education and specialized in Chinese and reading education. As a reading teacher, she is mainly responsible for guiding students’ reading, speaking skills, and drama performances. Teacher Liu has a very rich teaching experience and she believes that the key to a successful teaching is to establish good teacher-student relationships and routines. Children need to learn and grow through “education of love” along with “iron discipline”. The teacher shared how to give children clear instructions and ways to develop a reward system.

The second lesson was led by Teacher Wang, who graduated from department of Sport and Health Management at Da-Yeh University. She has been teaching in elementary school for many years and has a lot of experience in teaching low-grade students. She shared the fun stories of leading classes.  Although the first and second grade students are naive and cute, but the teacher needs more enthusiasm, patience and methods to lead. Teacher Wang said that we could use video and sound to lead the lower grade students to read. Before reading, the teacher could put a CD of the story first to train children’s listening and it would also arouse children’s curiosity. In addition, the teacher also demonstrated using games to cultivate children’s thinking ability, such as group answering, looking for pictures to find animals, strengthening sentence pattern etc.

The third lesson was led by Teacher Lu. Teacher Liu, who graduated from the Department of Science Education and Application at National Taichung University of Education.  Her specialty is in reading and writing. With more than 20 years of teaching experience, teacher Lu is very good at leading middle and senior grade students. First of all, Teacher Lu explained that teachers should remember each person’s name, and made a surprise call to ask questions during class so that students’ concentration would be improved instantly.  Next, teacher Lu demonstrated picture book teaching in different ways such as silent reading and reciting, and then asked questions based on the story content to deepen children’s thinking and expression skills.

The fourth lesson was led by Teacher Lin who graduated from Department of English at Tamkang University. She was active in clubs during her college period and it has been very helpful for her to engage in education in the future.  Teacher Lin encouraged the trainees: “Every experience will leave a trace, and those who work hard will have an impact.”  She went on to say that in addition to the methods given by the previous teachers, to effectively lead senior grade students to read, the teacher can also ask students to make roadmap, focusing on any one of the followings: people, events, times, places and things. The students can draw to express the storyline. The trainees used the picture book “Miss Rumphius” to practice. Each group had different ideas and presented differently.  Everyone was happy.  Finally, teacher Liu summarized the key points of today’s course and took the students to play “radio drama”. Through sound games, sentence segmentation, rhythm and dramatic reading, students had a great practice.

Today ’s training course was co-organized by four teachers. We deeply appreciated the teachers for selflessly sharing the teaching essentials. Because they all had different backgrounds, specialties and teaching styles, which made the content of the course exciting, rich and diverse. During the training, we found that the greatest fun in the teaching process was learning. Whether it was the seed teachers who are learning the teaching method or the training teachers who taught the teaching techniques, it was an invaluable experience to have this interaction between teaching and learning. We hope that more seed teachers will join us and spread the good in the future.
